We often associate Muslim clothing for men with a long garment that covers them from shoulder to toe. This piece of garment is known as a thobe. It is often worn in Islamic countries and is a traditional piece of clothing. It can be best described as an ankle-length garment and resembles a robe. It is often coupled with pants underneath, which are known as sirwal. Sometimes, people may even pair it up with a lungi or an izaar.
This piece of Muslim clothing holds a lot of value in Islamic culture. Unlike hijab and burkha, it has multiple names. You would probably find a different name for it in every single country where it is worn. The term thobe is the standard term given to garment in the Arabic language. This particular term is however used mainly in Arab states of the Persian Gulf and even in some areas in South Egypt. As is established, thobes are mainly worn in the Arabian Peninsula. You would also find it as common attire in Iraq and even the other Arabic countries in the Peninsula. You would find some variations in all of the regions. Due to the hot climate, this garment is predominantly made up of cotton. But, the material can change based on the region you visit. In regions like Syria and Iraq, the thobe is made up of sheep’s wool for giving warmth. Additionally, the style may also vary. To give a more formal look, this garment can have an additional collar and sleeves. But, the styles and the material may vary- the largest variation in a thobe can best be seen in the names and the labels given to it. Dishdasha is a name given to this garment in the Levant region. While in the United Arab Emirates, it is most commonly known as kandura. When it comes to another style and name, Morocco has an interesting variant. In this region, the sleeves are much shorter so it looks more like a long t-shirt. Here it is referred to as gandora. The neck style here also is slightly lesser modest than the Saudi counterpart. Another amazing fact about this piece of Muslim clothing is that in some regions, it is used to refer to women’s garments also. The women’s long tunic in Palestine is also known as thobes. As we go towards the South, the name of this garment changes to Kanzu. Similarly, in Sudan and Upper Egypt, it is also known as gallabiyas or Jilabiyah. In Eritrea, it is also known as gallabiyas. In Israel, the term given to this garment is Kethoneth. But, our top pick is the lovely name given in Poshto where it is known as Peheran. The many lovely names of this garment make it such a varied preference of Muslim clothing for men all across the globe.
